What is 3G?
3G stands for third generation wireless. It is based on an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) initiative for a single global wireless standard called International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000).
It enhances the service experience such as multimedia, high speed mobile broadband, internet access with the ability to view video footage on your mobile handset. With a 3G phone and access to the Vodafone 3G network you can make video calls, watch live TV, access the high speed internet, receive emails and download music tracks, as well as the usual voice call and messaging services found on a mobile phone, like person to person video, live streaming, downloadable video of entertainment, news, current affairs and sport content and video messaging.
What is the difference between WCDMA and HSPA?
High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) is a amalgamation of two new generation mobile telephony protocols: - High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA). The term HSPA is commonly used to refer to UMTS based Vodafone 3G networks that support both HSDPA and HSUPA data for improved download and upload speeds. It can support speeds upto 21 Mbps & also reduces latency, Handsets, USB dongle & data cards are available with HSPA technology support.
WCDMA is a 3G technology that supports only low 3G speeds comparable to the existing EDGE network, For a true 3G experience, we recommend a HSPA device.
We recommend that a user upgrades his phone to a HSPA technology phone to ensure he enjoys the 3G services with high speed & best experience.
Will 3G services work in Prepaid & Postpaid both?
Yes, 3G services will work in Prepaid & Postpaid both the connections.
Do I need a separate SIM card to use 3G services?
No, your existing SIM card will work absolutely fine till the time you have a 3G compatible phone & connected to Vodafone 3G network.
Do I have a separate helpline number to call for 3G service queries & complaints?
Yes, you can call 116 for all queries on 3G, alternately you can even call Vodafone customer care .
Do I need a separate handset to use 3G services?
Yes, in order to use 3G services you need to have a handset which is compatible with Vodafone 3G network, in case you handset is already 3G compatible then you don’t need to purchase a new phone. Different 3G handsets have different speed capabilities, we recommend that you use an HSPA enabled handset for the best experience.
How would I know if my handset is 3G compatible or not?
When you are in a Vodafone 3G network area & if your handset shows “3G” or “H” on the top of the screen next to the network signal bars means that your phone is 3G compatible & you can use the services. You must also ensure that the phone settings are not set to ‘2G only’, alternately you can also check on your handset manufacturer website or www.vodafone.in/3G or your device box.
Also there are 2 types of handsets – WCDMA (R99) & HSPA.
WCDMA or R99 devices are 3G devices but support low 3G speeds.
HSPA devices are high speed devices & support anything from 3.6mbps to 7.2mbps depending on the device.
We recommend that a user should upgrade the handset from WCDMA to HSPA for better speeds & experience.
If I need a new 3G phone then do I need to purchase it only from Vodafone or any open market handset will also work fine?
It is not necessary to purchase a 3G device only from Vodafone; you can buy one from the open handset market but ensure that it is 3G HSPA or HSPA+ compatible so that you can access high / very fast 3G speeds from 3.6 mbps to 21.1 mbps
Do I need to configure any special settings on my phone to use 3G?
No, you do not need any additional settings to use 3G on your phone. However please ensure that you are latched on to 3G network once the 3G service is activated.
Do I need a specific type of handset for making a video call or can I use my existing 3G compatible device?
In order to make a video call, it is necessary to have a handset /device which supports video calling.
How much data usage do I consume when I make a video call?
Video call does not use data channels on Vodafone 3G network but accesses voice channels therefore you will not be consuming any data usage but get billed according to the number of minutes spoken multiplied by the rate per minute.
Can I make a video call while using other operator network while roaming?
Yes, you can use all 3G service seamlessly while roaming on other operator network if we have a roaming tie-up with that particular operator & therefore you can even make video calls.
Is it necessary for both the parties to have a 3G phone & service to be to make & receive video calls?
Yes, it is necessary for both the parties to have a 3G phone with video calling capability & connected on 3G network.
Can I make a video call to other operator customer having a 3G phone connected on a 3G network?
Yes, you can make a video call in such a situation network can be of any other operator.
What do I do when I am unable to make a video call despite of having the required handset & Vodafone 3G network is connected?
In such a situation, you will first need to check if the person you are trying to call also has a video compatible 3G phone & is connected a 3G network. In spite of that if it is not connecting then please call our Vodafone customer care service.
Can I connect my handset to my PC or laptop to use 3G services & access internet as a fast speed?
Connecting a handset to laptop or PC is called tethering, this is definitely possible on Vodafone 3G network with high speeds provided your device allows / supports tethering. The charges will be applicable as per the tariff plan activated.
What is a 3G data card / USB dongles?

How fast is 3G speed as compared to 2G ?
Practically you will get 20 to 30 times faster speeds on Vodafone 3G network as compared to 2G.
Does 3G improve my voice quality automatically?
No, the voice quality is the same in 2G and 3G. It brings additional capacity to further support peak voice usage.
When is Vodafone launching 3G services in India?
Vodafone has launched 3G services in India in selected cities. You can now activate any of our 3G tariffs & start enjoying 3G services on your Vodafone Mobile phone.
Will 3G work only in my city or even while roaming?
Yes, 3G will not only work in your home network but also while roaming in India and abroad if we have a roaming tie-up with the operators in India & abroad
What happens when I move from 3G to 2G network?
When a user moves from 3G to 2G network then all the service supported on Vodafone 3G network like, video call, high speed internet access, etc will not be available, the user will get basic service like what he gets now. If you were on a voice call while moving from 3G to 2G network, the call will continue.
Will 3G services be available across India or in select cities?
To begin with, 3G services have been made available in the following cities.
